Turn the ignition crucial off. Hook up the scan tool towards the diagnostic connector. On the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, this connector is located on the bottom on the driver's side dash, towards the left in the hood release lever behind a tiny plastic cover Auto key programmer. Eliminate the cover by prying it out with your finger. Plug the connector on the scan tool into the vehicle's connector.

Turn the ignition essential on to energy up the scan tool. Choose "Read Codes" from the scan tool's main menu, or push the "Read" button on the tool, depending on the manufacturer from the scan tool. Some scan tools may require that the codes be read before the tool allows the codes to be erased to reset the engine light.

Write down any stored codes and their descriptions for reference should the light come back on. This may be helpful in diagnosing future problems.

Push the "Back" button and pick "Clear Codes" from the main menu, or push the "Erase" button, depending on the manufacturer in the Auto diagnostic tool. A message may be displayed on the tool asking if you are sure you want to erase the codes. Choose "Yes" to clear the codes and reset the light.

Turn the crucial off and unplug the tool. Reinstall the plastic cover over the diagnostic connector.
